You must have a medical degree from an institution listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. If your medical school is not listed in this directory, it may still be approved by some professional regulatory organisations, if it meets certain defined criteria.
The EPIC Report produced by the ECFMG in the USA is the most widely accepted report of primary source verification of medical qualifications worldwide and can be obtained by application on line. However the EPIC Report is not accepted by the professional regulatory authorities of the Arabian Gulf States which require a locally obtained DataFlow Report (see next question).
If you want to practice medicine in the Arabian Gulf States (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain) you will need to obtain a DataFlow Report which is a primary source verification of qualifications, professional experience and licence. This can be obtained by on line application.
Each jurisdiction has its own professional regulatory authority with specific requirements for professional registration in a general or specialist category. Most regulatory authorities will require a report of primary source verification of qualifications and supportive professional references. Some may require that you take examinations such as LMCC, USMLE, PLAB, AMC or NZREX or Specialist Prometric Exams. Before applying for jobs, you should understand the regulatory requirements for obtaining a professional registration in the appropriate category and a licence to practice medicine.
General Practitioners, often called Family Physicians, are generalist physicians working in primary care managing patients of all ages in the community. A postgraduate qualification in this field is required for successful job applications and the most commonly recognised ones are the MRCGP, MICGP, American Board of Family Medicine, FRACGP and CFPC.
Applicants for consultant and specialist jobs must have a recognised postgraduate specialist qualification which is accepted by the relevant professional regulatory authority. The most frequently accepted qualifications are the Royal College Fellowships from UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, the American Board Certifications and their equivalents from Western Europe, Singapore and Hong Kong. Subspecialists must have a fellowship or defined structured postgraduate training in the relevant secondary specialist field.
