  • What is the scope of practice for a paediatrician?

The scope of practice required for paediatrician jobs varies by employer, hospital size and location.

In small hospitals,  paediatricians will usually need broad, general skills and the ability to manage many conditions in children of all ages including neonates. Some experience working in rural and remote environments may be useful.

In larger secondary and tertiary hospitals, the scope of the paediatrician may be general or restricted to a subspecialist field like neonatology or cardiology. The paediatrician will work in a team with many consultants, usually specialised in different fields.

Polyclinics hire paediattricians for out patient consultations and day case procedures.

  • Are career prospects good for paediatricians?

Paediatrics is a popular and competitive speciality with a lot of well qualified candidates for jobs. However, there are jobs available in the field, in rural hospitals, secondary and tertiary hospitals and occasionally in polyclinics.
