    Candidates for general surgery jobs must have a medical degree and specialist postgraduate qualification in general surgery acquired upon completion of a structured postgraduate training program. 


    The favoured qualifications are as follows:

    2. Ireland - FRCSI and CSD
    3. USA - American Board of Surgery
    4. Canada - FRCSC
    5. Australia and New Zealand - FRACS 
    6. Germany - Facharzt
    7. France - DES

    Qualifications from other countries are often accepted so please contact us if uncertain if your qualification will be accepted for a particular role.


  • What is the scope of practice for a general surgeon?

    The scope of practice required for general surgery jobs varies by employer, hospital size and location. 

    In rural or remote hospitals, general surgeons require a very broad range of skills, which will often include basic orthopaedic skills, and the ability to work independently and reourcefully.


    In secondary and tertiary hospitals, the scope of the general surgeon is usually restricted to specialist fields of practice such as upper GI surgery, colorectal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, endocrine surgery, breast surgery or bariatric surgery. For these jobs, some fellowship or subspecialist training is usually required.

  • Are career prospects good for general surgeons?

    General surgery is a popular and competitive speciality with a lot of well qualified candidates for jobs. However, there are many jobs available in the field which is one of the largest hospital specialities.


    General Surgeons are sought for jobs in rural areas of Canada, Australia and New Zealand where the work can be challenging and interesting as well as truly general in scope.


    General Surgeons are widely sought for jobs in secondary and tertiary hospitals where they usually practise general surgery in combination with a specialist field such as colorectal surgery or one of the others mentioned above.


    Some polyclinics hire general surgeons for out patient consultations and day case surgery.
