An excellent short-term opportunity is available for an Unaccredited Surgical Registrar to join a busy General Surgery service at a major regional hospital in Victoria.

Offering substantial operating theatre exposure, structured registrar teaching and surgical mentorship, this position is particularly suited to doctors seeking to strengthen their surgical experience and prepare for future surgical training opportunities in Australia.

The Position

The General Surgical service is staffed by five accredited surgical trainees, five unaccredited registrars and dedicated junior medical officers, providing a strong clinical and educational environment.

As an Unaccredited Surgical Registrar, you will work as an integral member of an assigned surgical team. Responsibilities include:
  • Supporting the management of general surgical inpatients
  • Assessment and management of acute surgical presentations
  • Participation in ward rounds and clinical decision-making
  • Evening and weekend roster commitments
  • Providing rostered night cover
  • Working closely with consultant surgeons, accredited trainees, junior doctors, nursing staff and other clinical teams
The position provides considerable opportunities to develop practical surgical experience within a high-volume regional referral service.

Operating Theatre Experience
A significant advantage of this position is the opportunity for hands-on operating theatre exposure.

Depending on experience, case mix and appropriate supervision, registrars may participate as either primary operator or first assistant.

The role also includes rostered elective operating theatre exposure, providing further opportunities to develop operative skills and consolidate surgical experience.

Surgical Training and Mentorship
The department has a well-established Registrar Teaching Program and a strong commitment to education and professional development.
Registrars will have opportunities to:
  • Participate in structured surgical teaching
  • Develop operative and perioperative management skills
  • Teach medical students and junior medical officers
  • Develop clinical leadership skills
  • Participate in a surgical mentorship programme
  • Become involved in research and other academic activities
  • Prepare for the Generic Surgical Sciences Examination (GSSE)
  • Develop non-clinical competencies relevant to future surgical training
The combination of clinical responsibility, theatre exposure and structured professional development makes this an attractive position for doctors intending to pursue a career in surgery.

Candidate Profile

The position would suit a doctor with previous surgical experience who is ready to undertake responsibilities at Registrar level within an Australian hospital.
Candidates should normally have:
  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • Eligibility for appropriate medical registration with AHPRA
  • Relevant postgraduate surgical experience
  • Clinical experience appropriate for appointment at HM25–HM30 level
  • Experience managing acute and elective surgical patients
  • Good clinical assessment and decision-making skills
  • Effective communication and multidisciplinary teamwork skills
  • A demonstrated commitment to surgical training and professional development
Candidates will also be required to provide evidence of the required immunisation record, including 2026 influenza vaccination, as part of the appointment process.

The Hospital The position is based within a major regional health service providing comprehensive acute, surgical, medical, critical care and specialist services.

The hospital operates modern facilities and provides services including General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Cardiology, Renal Medicine, Oncology, Women's and Children's Services, specialist outpatient services and Mental Health.

The scale and breadth of the service provide registrars with exposure to a substantial and varied patient population.

Each year, the service manages:
  • More than 50,000 hospital admissions
  • Over 60,000 Emergency Department presentations
  • More than 100,000 specialist clinic service events
This provides an excellent clinical environment in which to develop experience managing both acute and complex surgical presentations.
