This role combines in-house medical care for residents with responsibility for an on-site outpatient clinic serving visiting patients, offering a broad and rewarding scope of practice across the continuum of elderly care. The successful candidate will also participate in an on-call rota to ensure timely medical support for urgent clinical needs within the residence.
The Role Primary Medical Care for Residents
- Conduct regular clinical assessments, diagnosis, and management of acute and chronic conditions prevalent in older adults.
- Develop, implement, and review individualised treatment and care plans addressing both physical and mental health needs.
- Work closely with nursing staff, physiotherapists, dietitians, and other allied health professionals to deliver holistic, multidisciplinary care.
- Provide specialist geriatric consultations for external patients attending the facility.
- Perform clinical evaluations, initiate investigations, and manage ongoing care, including referrals and follow-up planning where appropriate.
- Participate in on-call cover to manage urgent and emergency medical issues within the nursing home.
- Respond promptly and professionally to clinical incidents, ensuring resident safety and continuity of care.
- Lead and contribute to preventative health initiatives, including immunisation programmes, screening, and wellness planning.
- Educate residents and families on ageing-related health issues, disease prevention, and long-term health management.
- Maintain comprehensive, accurate, and timely medical records in line with regulatory and organisational requirements.
- Communicate relevant clinical updates effectively to care teams and management.
- Medical degree with specialist training and/or substantial experience in Geriatric Medicine.
- Eligibility for, and possession of, a valid licence to practise medicine in Malta.
- Demonstrated experience in a geriatric, residential, or nursing home setting.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-centred approach to elderly care.
- Willingness and reliability to undertake on-call duties.
- Expertise in chronic disease management and palliative or end-of-life care.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records and healthcare technologies used in elder care and outpatient settings.
- Strong team-working skills within multidisciplinary clinical environments.
