Te Whatu Ora manages and centrally plans all national health services, including hospital and specialist services, primary and community care with the goal of consistent and equitable delivery. The plans are then implemented via regional and local offices. It provides over 60% of healthcare to New Zealand citizens and residents, financed via taxation.


Te Whatu Ora owns and operates over 40 hospitals and employs over 80,000 people. Facilities include:


  • tertiary hospitals in Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton and Christchurch
  • regional general hospitals
  • district general hospitals
  • rural hospitals


The portfolio of services includes:


  • Primary health, wellbeing and community-based services which are planned centrally and then purchased through the four regional divisions of Te Whatu Ora.
