FAQs About General Practice Jobs in Canada
Family Physician: Professional Registration
In Canada, each province has its own medical professional regulatory authority termed the College of Physicians and Surgeons. There is no single licence which permits medical practice across the country and family physicians must apply for registration in the state or states where they seek to practice, whether on a locum or permanent basis.
Despite this, the requirements for registration have been harmonised across the country and are almost the same for all Colleges.
In general, candidates for general practitioner jobs in Canda must have the following credentials:
- Medical degree
- Account with PhysiciansApply and EPIC primary source credential verification
- Postgraduate qualification in general practice or family medicine listed above ie an "approved qualification"
- A certificate of eligibility from the College of Family Physicians of Canada
- A current unrestricted licence in jurisdiction of practice.
Family Physician: Financial Compensation
In Canada most general practitioners work on a fee for service basis which is performance based and pay a percentage of total revenue to the pactice owner to cover rent, administration and maintainance costs. This is in the range of 25-35% of total revenue.
Most general practitioners can generate upwards of CAD $ 400,000 per annum and some earn more that CAD $ 1 million.
There are some salaried jobs for general practitioners in Canada and these are often a good option for physicians who are new to working in Canada.
Family Physician: Visas and Work Permits
Many medical practices and employers of general practitioners will sponsor visas and work permits for international candidates who do not hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
Preference is always given to local candidates for jobs but where no local candidates are available, employers must advertise the position and create a labour market report which is then used to sponsor a visa for an international physician.
The Atlantic Provinces of Canada have an expedited pathway to permanent residency for physicians.
This includes Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
