An Overview

The State of Qatar is a peninsular nation jutting from the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia into the Persian (Arabian) Gulf.

Following Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in the early 20th century until gaining independence in 1971 and has since been an hereditary monarchy ruled by the House of Al Thani.

Qatar's terrain comprises arid desert and a long coastline of beaches and dunes. On the coast is the capital city Doha, known for its futuristic skyscrapers and other ultramodern architecture inspired by ancient Islamic design, such as the limestone Museum of Islamic Art.

The ancient traditions of Arabia abound; falconry, camel racing, dhows (wooden cargo boats) bobbing on the water and a fine and expansive souq. But the country is developing rapidly, Doha is a world-class city in the making, the home of globally expanding media group, Al Jazeera Media Network, and the host of 2022 FIFA world cup.

Economy

The economy of Qatar is one of the richest in the world based on GDP per capita, ranking generally among the top ten richest countries on world rankings.

Petroleum and natural gas are the cornerstones of Qatar's economy and account for more than 70% of total government revenue.

Qatar has the world's third largest proven natural gas reserve and is the second-largest exporter of natural gas.

Qatar has a booming economy and rapidly growing infrastructure. With one of the highest global per capita incomes and smallest populations of any country, Qatar has high living standards and a need for a skilled expatriate workforce to develop services in most sectors to international standards.
