The psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry, the branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental disorders. The psychiatrist evaluates the mental and physical condition of patients with psychiatric symptoms and formulates the diagnosis and treatment plans. The psychiatrist works as the clinical leader of the multi-disciplinary team responsible for the management of psychiatric patients in hospital, out patient or community settings.

The psychiatrist must complete a residency or structured postgraduate training programme in psychiatry passing a formal specialist examination and then may undertake further training in a subspecialist field such as child and adolescent psychiatry, old age psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, psychotherapy, learning disability or addiction psychiatry.

Psychiatrists are in strong demand to fill a growing number of senior and training positions all over the world.
