Role Details:

These roles are located in a general hospital with 260 beds and 24/7 emergency department which is accredited for 12 months Australian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) advanced training and paediatric log book requirements.

You will work side by side with a dedicated team including 15 very experienced emergency physicians. The consultant group provides close supervision for trainees with a commitment to clinical teaching.You will gain experience in many procedures and develop your clinical skills to be the best. 

The consultants enthusiastically lead  weekly RMO teaching sessions as well as teaching for those sitting examinations. Rotations to other specialty services (ICU, anaesthetics, paediatrics, and medicine) are established.

The department is well supported by all the other services. Radiology has the latest CT scanner, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and Emergency Medicine staff actively utilise ultrasound in their patient care, with 2 machines in the ED including the latest Sonosite.

The hospital supports 3 small regional hospitals and all 4 provide secondary care services for a population of approximately 200,000.  Auckland is the closest tertiary care centre. It is a regional base hospital providing a wide range of services including ED, medical specialties, surgical specialties, ICU, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, and Psychiatry.

As well as a warm climate, the "winterless north" offers excellent schools, affordable housing and scenic coastal areas offering a range of recreational activities. It is just two hours' drive or 25 minute flight from the international hub of Auckland and is well serviced with flights. There are great surf beaches and beautiful harbours and bays for sailing, kite surfing and windsurfing. It is also a top spot for fishing and diving with easy access to the world famous Poor Knights Marine reserve. There are also many beautiful forests and stunning hills to explore and climb.


Essential Requirements:

  • General registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or eligibility for this
  • 12 months emergency medicine experience
