Location: Whangarei

Role Details:

An intensive care medicine registrar in a regional general hospital with a modern 8 bed ICU providing care for 525 patient admissions per year; with over 40% mechanically ventilated. The department  provides an ICU outreach service and holds an accreditation for training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine.

Currently there are eight consultant Intensivists contributing to a 1:8 roster and seven registrars providing cover 24/7. Every day, there is a wide range of presentations including paediatrics and major trauma.

The department provides medical and nursing cover for a busy flight retrieval service in conjunction with St John and the Northern Emergency Services Trust (NEST) - overseeing approximately 480 helicopter transfers per year.

CICM trainees may have the option of 6 months anaesthesia during their 12 month appointment (2 trainees per year). Trainees from other specialties, depending on availability, may be offered three months in anaesthesia during their 12 month appointment.

There is an active clinical training programme and regular quality assurance meetings.

The hospital is a 250 bed regional general hospital with 24/7 emergency department and supports 3 small regional hospitals, providing secondary care services for a population of approximately 170,000.  Auckland is the closest tertiary care centre. It is a regional base hospital providing a wide range of services including ED, medical specialties, surgical specialties, ICU, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, and Psychiatry.

As well as a warm climate, the "winterless north" offers excellent schools, affordable housing and scenic coastal areas offering a range of recreational activities. It is just two hours' drive or 25 minute flight from the international hub of Auckland and is well serviced with flights. There are great surf beaches and beautiful harbours and bays for sailing, kite surfing and windsurfing.
