Committed and enthusiastic emergency medicine trainees are sought for FACEM accredited registrar jobs in a busy regional general hospital in New Zealand.

The Emergency Department:

  • accredited for 12 months of Australasian College for Emergency Medicine advanced training.
  • Australasian Level 4 regional trauma centre
  • sees approximately 48,000 presentations per annum.
  • sees both blunt and penetrating trauma as well as high acuity paediatric and adult medical patients.
  • has a 30+% admission rate.
  • has access to all medical and surgical subspecialties with the exception of cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery
  • offers a high rate of exposure to critical procedures compared to other large departments.
  • offers access to excellent non-ED, accredited runs in ICU, anaesthetics, paediatrics, cardiology and general medicine.
  • provides weekly protected registrar-led teaching sessions as well as regular critical incident, clinical radiology, and paediatric teaching.
  • provides regular clinical simulations that are registrar-led.
  • has an exceptionally high pass rate for the Part I FACEM exam 
  • provides good support for clinical research.

Key Duties


  • provide appropriate assessment, diagnosis and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Service
  • liaise with other specialist services within the hospital and community as appropriate
  • contact and see families or support persons of patients
  • attend relevant clinical and educational meetings in the department
  • present cases to the Emergency Department SMOs within 30 minutes of seeing a patient
  • see a minimum of 1 -2 patients per hour every shift.

You require:



  • medical degree from WHO accredited school
  • eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • It is ideal to have at least 6 months experience in emergency medicine and paediatrics.
  • Prior emergency medicine registrar experience would be desirable
