A registrar in psychiatry is sought for a regional general hospital in the north island of New Zealand. The hospital provides secondary level services to a population of over 170,000 with referral to Auckland for tertiary medical care. There is 24 hour emergency department, medicine, surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, obsterics and gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry and full radiological and laboratory support.
The department of psychiatry is part of the Psychiatry Training Programme for the FRANCPsych examinations and has had considerable success in providing comprehensive training to Registrars enabling them to qualify as Psychiatrists. The psychiatry program offers runs in acute adult psychiatry, community adult psychiatry, Māori Mental health, child and youth mental health, liaison psychiatry and psychiatry for older adults. There is excellent Consultant support and access to regular local teaching and participation in teaching through the Northern Region training scheme.
Responsibilities include the assessment and treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders in hospital in patient and out patient settings, the supervision of junior medical staff and on call duties.
