Excellent opportunities for psychiatrists in training are available from this month onwards in a regional hospital which is part of the Northern Region Psychiatry Training Programme for the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. The hospital is the largest hospital in the region, providing secondary care services for the region supported by three growing district hospitals. It provides services for a population of almost 200,000 and has had considerable success in providing comprehensive training to Registrars enabling them to gain Fellowship of the RANZCP. The psychiatry program offers runs in acute inpatient psychiatry, community adult psychiatry, Māori mental health, child and youth mental health, liaison psychiatry and psychiatry for older adults.
There is excellent consultant support and access to regular local teaching and participation in teaching through the Northern Region training scheme.
The province boasts a subtropical climate and some of the most scenic and exciting coastal areas in New Zealand. There are opportunities for outdoor activities, including surfing, diving, fishing, hiking and biking. On-site, there is a well-equipped staff gym and an open-air pool. Whangarei itself has all the convenient amenities of a modern, small city but the Auckland metropolis is only two hour's drive away for those special weekend activities.
