This role is with the regional Mental Health and Addiction Services of one of New Zealand's district health boards providing publicly funded psychiatric services to a population of 200,000 from a regional general 250 bed hospital, three small district hospitals and a network of community mental health teams. 

The position is one of two psychiatrists providing services to the adult population with mental health problems in the Far North locality of the region which is rural and has a high percentage of Maori people and deprivation.

Based in Kaitaia close to the tip of the north west corner of New Zealand, this role suits an experienced psychiatrist who is interested in rural and cross cultural psychiatry. You will be based in a small general hospital and will be supported by the psychiatry department at the regional hospital and by the tertiary services in Auckland.


Key Duties
  • Join a an innovative multidisciplinary team in contributing to an integrated model of service delivery in both outpatient and inpatient settings. 
  • provide general adult community based clinical care across the region
  • undertake mental health assessments and formulate treatment plans based on current treatment guidelines and generally accepted specialist psychiatric practice.
  • Utilise videoconferencing to remain an integral part of
    discharge planning process for clients admitted to the inpatient
    unit
  • When required undertake duties on the on-call roster during normal working hours to provide emergency assessments and management for patients referred to the health board
  • Provide supervision and advice to registrars and other staff 
  • Provide supervision and training to resident medical officers 


Requirements
  • To be considered, you must have or be eligible for specialist registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in a vocational and/ or locum tenens Psychiatry scope of practice, with no restrictions to your APC.
  • FRANZCP or equivalent specialist qualification
  • Broad general adult psychiatry skills
  • Drivers Licence
