The Role

You will be a vital member of the Psychiatric medical and multidisciplinary team in this role you will be responsible for the provision of clinical assessment and psychiatric treatment for adults and seniors in the catchment population based in the community. In addition, this position provides clinical leadership, advice, consultation, liaison and support to General practitioners, health care professionals, other providers and agencies, and to carers and consumers throughout the region.

This is a teaching and supervision position of junior medical staff and highly valued by the Postgraduate Medical Council of WA for the case mix exposure and experience gained by Doctors in Training.

You should have highly developed communication, interpersonal, teamwork, negotiation and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

You must be eligible for registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia AHPRA), and hold Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRACS) or equivalent.

The Hospital

The role is based in the major Integrated District Health Service for the Eastern Wheatbelt Health District. It is a public facility that houses an emergency department and provides a range of services including domiciliary care, hospice care, nursing home care and a rehabilitation unit.

The facility has undergone redevelopment to include a new emergency department, upgrades to palliative care, medical imaging, sterilising services and administration areas. In addition, the upgraded Merredin Health Service includes a new building for Aboriginal health, allied health and outpatient services, school and child health clinics, mental health consulting rooms for visiting specialists and telehealth amenities..


The Location

The Wheatbelt borders the Perth metropolitan area and includes the coast from Lancelin to Jurien Bay. Northam in the Avon Valley is the regional hub and only 50 minutes commuting distance from the outer metro. This position is primarily based in Northam in the main mental health clinic. Services are delivered across the region through an extensive video conferencing network.


The Wheatbelt Mental Health Service region has a widely dispersed population of 78,000, with major service centres at Northam, Narrogin, Merredin and Moora. With its economy largely agriculture, the region contains numerous small farming communities.  Most towns are enviably well-equipped with modern sporting facilities whilst offering affordable housing.

The region has extensive education and health facilities.  Approximately 4.5 % of the population are aboriginal, with 39% of the aboriginal population being 14 years old or younger.  Of the broader population, 22.8% of the population are 14 years old or younger and 10.3% aged 15-24 years.
