A Consultant Psychiatrist position is available this year with the clinical team in a regional hospital in Western Australia in a role which offers a competitive salary, 5-year contract and relaxed lifestyle.

The Role

In this role you will be accountable for the clinical management of patients (including families and carers) of the region as a member of the multidisciplinary team. You will also provide clinical services primarily to the Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU), and to the whole region as required in agreement with the Clinical Director and Regional Mental Health Manger.

In addition, this position will provide supervision, training and education to Junior Medical Staff and Registrars in training for the RANZCP.

Suitable candidates must be eligible for registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia AHPRA), hold Fellowship with The Australian and New Zealand College Psychiatrists (RANZCP) or RANZCP recognised equivalent specialist qualifications/recognition.

You will have demonstrated significant clinical experience managing high acuity patients in an acute mental health setting and have the ability to understand service strategic and operational requirements, and implement sustainable change to improve patient safety and reduce access blocks or delays in access to care. You must have highly developed effective communication, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to represent the organisation externally.

The Hospital

A 135 bed public facility co-located with a similarly sized private hospital St John of God Health Care which forms part of the South West Health Campus. Opened in 1999, it is the biggest hospital and health care complex in regional Western Australia. It delivers health care to more than 80,000 of the region’s local residents as well as visitors. The hospital has undergone an upgrade which includes the first ICU outside of the Metropolitan area, a comprehensive cancer care centre and an extended Emergency Department.

The health campus is a recently revitalised 106-bed general inpatient facility and the second largest regional public hospital in WA. It services more than 50,000 residents of the city as well as outlying towns, and rural and remote communities in the region. It houses an emergency department and provides a range of services including an oncology unit, obstetric services, maintenance renal dialysis unit, paediatric services, psychiatric unit, palliative care unit (which includes accommodation units for cancer patients) and areas for allied health services such as physiotherapy, occupational health, audiology, dietetics, podiatry and social work.

The Location

The South West region is located in the south-west corner of the state, facing the Indian and Southern Oceans. It shares its eastern boundary with Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions. It covers an area of 23,998 sq km, has 12 local government areas and a diverse geographic profile ranging from rugged coastline and beaches to agricultural landscapes. The economy is based around tourism, mining and construction, retail and agriculture.
