A new role has arisen for a Psychiatrist practising Adult General Psychiatry in a hospital in patient setting. Located in a city of the North Island, the postion offers a great lifestyle, permanent employment, excellent opportunities for continuing medical education and research and interesting work in modern integrated psychiatry services which are fully accredited for training by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

The Hospital

This position is based at a 350-bed hospital in the lower part of the North Island of New Zealand serving a population of 170,000. It is affiliated with two medical schools and actively participates in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education including training for the FRANZCR for which it holds active accreditation, and a superb CME programme, an active postgraduate medical society and excellent clinical library facilities .

You can expect to have access to a thorough continuing medical education programme and opportunities to participate in research projects, pursue subspecialist fields of interest and become involved with medical student and junior medical officer postgraduate education.

The hospital is a secondary care facility providing most medical and surgical services, except for Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Neurosurgery. But is the regional base for head and neck oncology service which has responsibility for a population of 550,000.

The collegial relationships between departments are strong and consultation with other specialists is easy, either formally with multidisciplinary meetings or informally as required.

The hospital undertook a transformational change programme to firmly establish itself as a high performing health system that meets the current and future demands of its communities, with a strong focus on patient experience and improved clinical outcomes.

Transformed Comprehensive community-based mental health services across the complete age range include:

• Child, adolescent and family mental health services 
• Comprehensive community adult services
• Specialist Maori mental health services (Oranga Hinengaro) 
• Specialist services for Mental Health for the elderly
• Specialist community alcohol and drug services including OST services
• Comprehensive 24 hour acute care services (crisis intervention service)
• Acute inpatient services (including intensive mental health care-26 beds)
• General hospital liaison psychiatry
• Early intervention services
• Intensive community rehabilitation services.

 

The Position

We are looking for a dedicated General Adult Psychiatrist to join the Mental Health and Addiction Service to work iwth in patients.

The hospital services have embarked on a significant transformation programme in the past 12 months, as it moves to implement the recommendations from He Ara Oranga, Mental Health & Addiction Inquiry.  With a new clinical leadership team the service is consolidating recent gains and further developing an integrated range of well-connected services along with NGO partners in the community.

There is a commitment to continuing medical education and professional development and the peer review group is enrolled with the maintenance of professional standards programme of the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. The hospital is recognised by the College for registrar training in inpatient, general adult community, and child and adolescent psychiatry.

There are opportunities to participate in the further development of the service delivery model, develop an area of special interest or become involved in research.

The role combines clinical duties providing psychiatric services to outpatients, consultation with colleagues and education and training of resident medical staff.

You are required to have completed postgraduate training in Psychiatry and hold the FRANZCP or equivalent qualification and be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

 

The Location

The hospital is situated in a major university city and is at the hub of key routes to the central North Island ski fields, and river adventures. Wellington the capital city, is only a two-hour journey by road, as are the local wine growing regions.

Situated in the lower half of the North Island of New Zealand, the region offers visitors and residents a unique mix of lifestyle by combining rural charm with the convenience of sophisticated living with all modern services and luxuries expected of vibrant cities, including a shopping plaza, a Globe theatrical centre, the Regent and Centre Point theatres, and dozens of hotels/motels.
