Ophthalmology Registrar to join a team of three Eye Consultants, specialist nurses and Technicians in January 2022 providing a wide range of elective and acute services to the region of over 200,000 people.
The available clinical experience is excellent and includes a very high incidence of skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma. You will get broad experience of lid surgery, diabetic retinopathy, laser and intravitreal injections and ARMD. There is also ultrasound and OCT available, and Pascal and YAG lasers.
Being one of the only ophthalmic registrars you will gain much experience, there is the opportunity for extensive on the job teaching from the consultant staff with whom you will work in a one on one situation. On call with a consultant cover, you will get experience of acute ophthalmology with the opportunity for experience of Ophthalmic Trauma being invaluable in our rural setting.
Consultant ophthalmologist special interests include Paediatric Ophthalmology, Anterior Segment and Medical retina. Other than Vitreo-retinal work which is referred to Auckland the department provides surgical management of most eye conditions.
The training program includes weekly teaching including journal club and teaching for registrars, audits and regular M&M meetings are held and you will be encouraged to take part in the teaching program. You will be closely supervised and supported in clinics and theatres in the acute and elective settings.
The hospital is a 250 bed regional general hospital with 24/7 emergency department and supports 3 small regional hospitals, providing secondary care services for a population of approximately 170,000. Auckland is the closest tertiary care centre. It is a regional base hospital providing a wide range of services including ED, medical specialties, surgical specialties, ICU, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, and Psychiatry.
As well as a warm climate, the "winterless north" offers excellent schools, affordable housing and scenic coastal areas offering a range of recreational activities. It is just two hours' drive or 25 minute flight from the international hub of Auckland and is well serviced with flights. There are great surf beaches and beautiful harbours and bays for sailing, kite surfing and windsurfing. It is also a top spot for fishing and diving with easy access to the world famous Poor Knights Marine reserve. There are also many beautiful forests and stunning hills to explore and climb.
