An experienced and motivated specialist medical oncologist is sought to join a medical team in providing effective and high quality Oncology services to a region in the North Island of New Zealand.

The region has a population of over 200,000 people living across an agricultural landscape bounded by two beautiful but diverse coastlines. Your role will be based primarily in the regional general 250 bed hospital but will involve travel to three small hospitals scattered throughout the region to conduct local clinics. The hospital is a provider of standard secondary care services with tertiary support close at hand in Auckland and close ties to Auckland University.

Key Duties
  • Supervise, planning, management and clinical care of patients undergoing systemic therapy including chemotherapy
  • Supervise as appropriate supportive care of patients attending
    the oncology unit.
  • Provide new patient assessment and follow-up clinics at
    and regional hospital support via telehealth where appropriate.
  • Provide a consulting service to inpatient and ED teams, and other hospital clinicians and GPs regarding management of oncology patients.
  • Refer patients to tertiary services as appropriate, and undertake ‘shared care where appropriate.
  • Attend to referrals from other wards/services as required.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings to establish treatment goals, and to review progress, management and discharge plans.
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to registrars and house officers as appropriate to their level of skill and provide supervision as appropriate.
  • There are no on call duties 

  • To be considered, you must have or be eligible for specialist registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in a vocational and/ or locum tenens Internal Medicine scope of practice, with no restrictions to your APC.
  • FRACP or equivalent specialist qualification
  • previous experience working in Oncology
