Medical Oncologist Consultant

An experienced and motivated specialist medical oncologist is sought to join a hospital based regional cancer service which provides medical oncology, radiation oncology and clinical haematology services.

The service:
  • predominantly a clinical service with facilities for inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy management
  • performs a number of high dose chemotherapy with PBSCR procedures each year.
  • maintains an active clinical research portfolio, and possibilities exist for pre-clinical research
  • an approved FRACP training centre
  • undertakes active post graduate teaching at House Officer, Senior House Officer and Registrar levels

Key Duties
  • Supervision, planning, management and clinical care of patients undergoing systemic therapy including chemotherapy
  • Supervise as appropriate supportive care of patients attending
    the oncology unit.
  • Provide new patient assessment and follow-up clinics at
    and regional hospital support via telehealth where appropriate.
  • Provide a consulting service to inpatient and ED teams, and other hospital clinicians and GPs regarding management of oncology patients.
  • Refer patients to tertiary services as appropriate, and undertake ‘shared care where appropriate.
  • Attend to referrals from other wards/services as required.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings to establish treatment goals, and to review progress, management and discharge plans.
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to registrars and house officers as appropriate to their level of skill and provide supervision as appropriate.

  • have or be eligible for specialist registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in a vocational scope of practice, with no restrictions to your APC.
  • FRACP or equivalent specialist qualification
  • previous experience working in Oncology
