A position for a permanent full time Specialist Intensivist is available in a regional secondary care hospital in New Zealand. Applications are invited from Specialists in possession of the Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine, or from suitable applicants at an advanced stage of training. Associated specialty interests such as anaesthesia, emergency medicine or internal medicine can be accommodated, and dual qualified specialists are encouraged to apply. In conjunction with the Clinical Director this post will assist with the further development of the critical care service and providing high quality training experience for the trainees.

The intensive care unit is a modern 8 bed unit proving level 2 intensive care. It also provides medical and nursing cover for a busy flight retrieval service overseeing approximately 480 helicopter transfers per year. Support and presence to smaller rural hospitals in the surrounding region  is provided via state of art Tele-health set up. There is 24/7 registrar cover, many of whom are Intensive care, ED, anaesthesia and rural hospital medicine trainees. The unit is accredited for 6 months of general ICU training and rural training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine. The case mix is diverse and includes major trauma and paediatrics.

The province boasts a subtropical climate and some of the most scenic and exciting coastal areas in New Zealand.  There are opportunities for outdoor activities, including surfing, diving, fishing, hiking and biking. On-site, there is a well-equipped staff gym and an open-air pool. Whangarei itself has all the convenient amenities of a modern, small city but the Auckland metropolis is only two hour's drive away for those special weekend activities.
