Role: Intensivist

Contract: Permanent, full time

Role Details:

Full time role for a motivated medical intensivist to provide effective and high quality intensive care medicine services to the region. The successful candidate will work in the Department of Intensive Care Medicine and will participate in teaching and training resident medical staff as well as be actively involved in the consultant on call roster.

A second specialty interest can be considered and there is the option to work towards a combined role with other departments in the hospital.

The Intensive Care Unit is a modern eight bed department providing care for 525 patient admissions per year; with over 40% mechanically ventilated. The department  provides an ICU outreach service and holds an accreditation for training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine.

Currently there are eight Intensivists contributing to a 1:8 roster and seven registrars providing cover 24/7. Every day, there is a wide range of presentations including paediatrics and major trauma.

The department provides medical and nursing cover for a busy flight retrieval service in conjunction with St John and the Northern Emergency Services Trust (NEST) - overseeing approximately 480 helicopter transfers per year.

The hospital is a 260 bed regional general facility which provides a complete range of secondary care services, 24/7 emergency department and supports three small regional hospitals. The tertiary referral centre is Auckland which is just two hours' drive or 25 minute flight away.

As a region Northland is renowned for its beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle. There are great surf beaches and beautiful harbours and bays for sailing, kite surfing and windsurfing. It is also a top spot for fishing and diving with easy access to the world famous Poor Knights Marine reserve. There are also many beautiful forests and stunning hills to explore and climb.

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • FCICM or equivalent board certification or Fellowship in Intensive Care Medicine or Medical Specialists committed to working towards attaining FCICM through the OTS pathway.
