Are you a specialist geriatrician looking for an exciting opportunity to help create innovative services for older people? If so, there is a new role awaiting in New Zealand. This position is full time and permanent and based in a regional hospital which is working with the local primary care services to implement a range of initiatives to enable older people to live well with frailty:
  • A multi-disciplinary Health of Older People team - supporting the Integrated Family Health Centres to proactively manage older people with frailty, with further expansion planned across the district
  • An Interface Geriatrics service to enable ‘front door’ geriatric assessment in the Emergency Department and Medical Admissions and Planning Unit
  • An acute care unit for older people with frailty opening in Autumn 2019 incorporating an OPAL unit – Older People’s Acute Assessment & Liaison unit
  • Expansion of our ortho-geriatric liaison service
The 350 bed hospital provides services for a population of almost 200,000 of which 20,000 are over age 65. The geriatric department is staffed with 5 consultants, 1 registrar and 1 RMO.
  • provision of clinical care 
  • 70:30 division of time between clinical and non clinical duties which include multidisciplinary team meatings, telephone consultations, case conferences and reviews
  • teaching and supervision of junior medical staff 
  • maintenance of records
  • awareness of risk management
  • awareness of policies with regard to health and safety
Selection Criteria
  • eligible for vocational registration in the scope of geriatric medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • FRACP or equivalent examination
  • evidence of higher training in Geriatrics
  • Fluent English (IELTS Academic module mean score 7.5)
