This role is great for a general surgeon with subspecialist training in breast and endocrine surgery who wants to join a dynamic and expanding team of surgeons working in a well-equipped modern facility with an interesting but reasonable case load and lots of time for study, research and education.

This is a new role for a seventh surgeon in an expanding and enthusiastic team in a delightful city of New Zealand close to Wellington the capital, boasting excellent educational and leisure opportunities and a modest living cost.

This position is based at a 350-bed hospital in the lower part of the North Island of New Zealand serving a population of 170,000. It is affiliated with two medical schools and actively participates in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education including training for the FRACS for which it holds active accreditation, and a superb CME programme, an active postgraduate medical society and excellent clinical library facilities .

You can expect to have access to a thorough continuing medical education programme and opportunities to participate in research projects, pursue subspecialist fields of interest and become involved with medical student and junior medical officer postgraduate education.

The hospital is a secondary care facility providing most medical and surgical services, except for Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Neurosurgery. But is the regional base for head and neck oncology service which has responsibility for a population of 550,000.

The collegial relationships between departments are strong and consultation with other specialists is easy, either formally with multidisciplinary meetings or informally as required.

The hospital undertook a transformational change programme to firmly establish itself as a high performing health system that meets the current and future demands of its communities, with a strong focus on patient experience and improved clinical outcomes.

You will join an enthusiastic department of six general surgeons, looking to expand with the addition of a seventh surgeon.

The team workload is very broad encompassing the full range of acute and elective general surgery, with particular emphasis on breast and endocrine surgery, gastrointestinal surgery including endoscopy, minimal access and laparoscopic surgery, surgical oncology, trauma, and vascular surgery.

Surgical oncology is practiced in conjunction and with close collaboration with the Regional Oncology Service (including medical oncology and radiotherapy) based on campus.  This latter service covers the lower central North Island. 

The hospital is the region’s preferred provider for the developing National Breast Cancer Screening Programme. 

The team has an excellent service from and rapport with Emergency Department, anaesthetic and ICU, pathology and laboratory services, and a full range of radiology/ imaging including interventional radiology, duplex, MRI, and nuclear medicine.  Site redevelopment is at the advanced planning stage.

Active supervision and teaching of several advanced general surgical trainees rotated from the RACS National Training Scheme as well as basic trainees/ registrars and senior house officers is expected


Requirements – Qualifications and Licence

  • The successful applicant will participate in the on-call roster for acute general surgery, have a relatively broad elective general surgical repertoire as well as a subspecialty interest.  The ideal candidate will possess formal post-fellowship accreditation in Breast and Endocrine Surgery. 
  • To be eligible for this role you must hold or be eligible to hold vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council.
