Role: Gastroenterologist Consultant and General Physician
Hours: 40 per week plus on call
Start: November 2021
Contract: 12 months fixed term
This role is a fixed term position of 12 months duration to cover leave and you will provide gastroenterology services and general medical cover.
The Gastroenterology Department provides outpatient gastroscopy and colonoscopy, ERCP, liver elastography, outpatient clinical care, inpatient gastroenterology care and bowel cancer screening services to the 160,000 people in the region.
It is to the University of Otago, has a training gastroenterology registrar in the department, and has a research relationship with Massey University. This environment provides excellent opportunity for both teaching and research.
This role is based in a regional general 350 bed hospital which offers most medical and surgical specialities with the exception of Cardiothoracic, Plastic and Neurosurgery.
The collegial relationships between departments are strong and consultation with other specialist is easy, either formally with multidisciplinary meetings or informally as required. There is an active postgraduate medical society and there are excellent clinical library facilities.
A major university city in the North island of New Zealand, Palmerston North is the home of Massey University and is at the hub of key routes to the central North Island ski fields, and river adventures. Wellington the capital city, is only a two hour journey by road, as are the wine growing regions of Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa.
Situated in the lower half of the North Island of New Zealand, the local region offers visitors and residents a unique mix of lifestyle by combining rural charm with the convenience of sophisticated living with all modern services and luxuries expected of vibrant cities, including a shopping plaza, a Globe theatrical centre, the Regent and Centre Point theatres, and dozens of hotels/motels.
There are excellent primary, intermediate and secondary schooling, both public and private, mixed and single sex. Cost of living is reasonable, housing very affordable, and rural living with stunning views only minutes from town is very achievable
- Eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- FRACP or equivalent board certification (American board of gastroenterology, FRCPC, FRCP / CCT all accepted)
- Excellent communication and time management skills
