The Hospital

The role is based in a region of the North Island of New Zealand with 4 hospitals covering an extensive area of territory. The largest hospital is a regional base hospital with 246 + beds providing secondary care services including 24/7 emergency department, medical and surgical specialties, ICU, ENT, O&G, Paediatrics and Psychiatry.  The three smaller hospitals provide basic primary and secondary care. The population has complex health needs.

The Emergency Department is located in the largest hospital , 246 bed Whangarei Hospital is the major referral hospital for the Northland region of New Zealand, with a direct catchment of 170,000.  

The Department of Emergency Medicine has 43,000 attendances per year of which 25% are paediatric. The department is currently led by 11 SMOs and is accredited with ACEM for 12 months Advanced Training and Paediatric Log Book Training and has a successful training programme for both Part 1 and Part 2 trainees.

The Role

  • Assessing, investigating and undertaking relevant further medical management of patients presenting to Emergency Department (ED)
  • Supervising the activities of junior medical staff working in ED. These include registrars, house-officers, medical students, nursing staff and other medical staff
  • Coordinating handover of patients within the department at the junior staff shift change
  • Screening of “definitive” or “reported” investigation results performed on patients during their ED attendance
  • Liaising with other health professionals to ensure efficient inter-service patient management with an emphasis on continuity of patient care.
  • Liaising with Emergency Services management and other personnel relevant to the efficient functioning of ED itself
  • Education of other medical staff (registrars, house officers, nursing staff, medical students and other medical personnel)

The Location

The successful applicant will be living in a beautiful part of New Zealand with warm summers, mild winters and lots of opportunities for outdoor activities on land and at sea just two hours' drive from Auckland, with regular flights to and from Auckland Airport.
