Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine

Scope of practice: clinical emergency medicine and research into Maori Health and Health Equality

Role Details

This is a fixed term contract for a junior FACEM or senior registrar in emergency medicine who wishes to work in clinical emergency medicine whilst pursuing research in the field of Maori Health or Health Care Equity.

The research will be applicable to Emergency Medicine and of benefit to the community within Aotearoa.  This may be a new research proposal, or we can connect the successful applicant with existing research. 

The hospital will offer a specialized well supported roster which does not involve night shifts or on call work.  It will involve mainly weekend work but this will leave the week free for research time or time to explore all the region has to offer. It offer one full day each week paid non-clinical time and CME to support additional research activity.

There is a friendly team of doctors and nurses working with a wide variety of adult and paediatric clinical presentations in a 25 bed unit.  The annual census is approximately 37,500 attendances per annum.

Rotorua has all secondary hospital specialties with tertiary level care provided at Waikato hospital.  This is a growing Emergency Department which is focused on evolving to meet the challenges of the population whilst developing as a regional training center. The population served is 35% Maori and the hospital is committed to improving inequity and aligning with the Manaaki Mana strategy laid out by ACEM.

  • Eligible for vocational/ general  or provisional vocational / general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Experience in emergency medicine to senior registrar level


  • FACEM or equivalent qualification
