Role: Consultant Surgeon – General Surgery

Salary: $479,701 - $570,532 p.a

Location:  Broome, Kimberley Western Australia.

About the Role:

The post is based in a 60 bed in patient facility, the largest hospital in the Kimberley region, with 25 000 presentations per year to the Emergency Department. Facilities include operating theatres, consulting rooms for visiting specialists, a public dental surgery, refurbished maternity unit and an expanded emergency department which has more than doubled in size to 15 acute bays.

The consultant surgeon is responsible for providing surgical services to patients attending the hospital and a visiting surgical service to regional hospitals which requires travel and spending nights away from home on a regular basis. A shared on call commitment is expected.

Services include surgical consultations, operating, post-operative care and participation in multidisciplinary care of patients.

Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff is required.

Full time contract up to 5 years duration, may possibly be extended.


  • Function as a Specialist in General Surgery and provide for the general surgical management of patients referred to the surgical unit and surgical patients at other sites.

  • Perform surgical procedures and operations, and conduct outpatient clinics as required.

  • Assist with emergency surgical management of life-threatening gynaecological haemorrhage where applicable commensurate with skills and credentials.

  • Participate in the afterhours, weekends and public holiday on-call roster.

  • Travel to other towns and remote communities to provide General Surgical services.

  • Provide clinical support to other clinicians in the region engaged in surgical management


Essential Requirements

  • Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA),

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) (or equivalent – American Board of Surgery FRCSC, FRCS / CCT,).

  • Laparoscopic surgical skills

  • Skills in Gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy and gastroscopy

  • Experienced in surgical management of trauma.

  • Highly developed communication, interpersonal, teamwork, negotiation and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research.

  • Current C Class drivers Licence and an ability and willingness to travel including overnight stays away from home


  • Experience in basic Orthopaedics

  • An understanding of Aboriginal Health issues

  • Experience working in a rural or remote environment
