We have an opportunity for an energetic consultant emergency physician (FACEM or equivalent) to join the Emergency Department in a New Zealand hospital in a University city. The Emergency Department is Australasian Level 4 regional trauma centre with approximately 44,000 adult and paediatric presentations per annum. It is an increasingly busy department that has maintained a 30+% admission rate despite rising volume. In addition to a robust general medicine service, there is 24/7 access to general surgery, O&G, paediatrics, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and ICU. Cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery services are provided by Wellington Hospital (two hours away).

There is a team of 9 consultant emergency physicians working four 10 hour shifts per week and averaging one weekend per month. They supervise and teach 9 senior house officers and 9 registrars and are accredited for 12 months advanced ACEM training and value highly their successful education programme.

The Manawatu is a beautiful region and Palmerston North is a vibrant multicultural city. Primary, intermediate, and secondary schools are excellent, and housing is affordable. Our location in the center of the lower North Island puts us in close proximity to excellent hiking and mountain bike trails, and we are only a short drive from the beach. Wellington, the Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, and Mt Ruapehu are only a couple of hours away.

Essentials:

  • Eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • FCEM of equivalent postgraduate qualification
