Cardiology Registrar

6 months cardiology with internal medicine cover

FRACP accredited

Role Details:

Cardiology registrar joining a team of medical registrars and consultants with special interests in cardiology, diabetes, respiratory medicine, nephrology and oncology. The hospital runs a basic and advanced physician training programme accredited for 24 months basic training and 12 months advanced physician training with RACP.

The cardiology service is a rapidly growing department, with subspecialties of imaging and angiography on site. The newly opened cardiac catheter lab allows you to gain experience with assessment and management of a large range of cardiology conditions.

The role is currently primarily outpatient focussed including regional/rural clinics, stress testing, echocardiography, cardioversions, inpatient consultations, heart failure, pacing/device clinics and will be evolving to coronary intervention within the next year.

You will also participate in the acute medicine on-call roster work with opportunity to expand experience in other specialties such as Acute Medicine, Nephrology, Oncology, Respiratory and Gastroenterology

The position will allow you to grow your skills as a Registrar working closely with your consultant means you can widen your practice as your skills grow.

There is close supervision for trainees in inpatient and outpatient settings, allied with a commitment to teaching. The hospital hosts medical students from Auckland University and this provides the opportunity to practice and improve your own teaching skills.

There is an active clinical training programme with didactic sessions, interactive based teaching, journal club and videoconferencing of RACP lectures.

The hospital is a 250 bed regional general hospital with 24/7 emergency department and supports 3 small regional hospitals, providing secondary care services for a population of approximately 170,000.  Auckland is the closest tertiary care centre. It is a regional base hospital providing a wide range of services including ED, medical specialties, surgical specialties, ICU, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, and Psychiatry.

As well as a warm climate, the "winterless north" offers excellent schools, affordable housing and scenic coastal areas offering a range of recreational activities. It is just two hours' drive or 25 minute flight from the international hub of Auckland and is well serviced with flights. There are great surf beaches and beautiful harbours and bays for sailing, kite surfing and windsurfing. It is also a top spot for fishing and diving with easy access to the world famous Poor Knights Marine reserve. There are also many beautiful forests and stunning hills to explore and climb.

Essential Requirements:

  • General registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or eligibility for this
  • 12 months internal medicine experience
