General Medicine Consultant
Full time / Fixed term 12 months
This is a 12-month appointment starting in December 2021 in one of New Zealand’s fastest growing health services in one of the best regions of the country.
Located in the northern coast of the North Island, this regional general hospital in a port city, is catering to a fast growing population and ageing demographic.
You will join the Department of Medicine, currently providing general internal medicine inpatient and outpatient services, plus a range of sub-specialty services to a population of approximately 260,000.
The position is based at Tauranga Hospital, a 359 bed Level 2 hospital, and will include elective work. There is the opportunity to also undertake planned care in your subspecialist area of practice at Whakatāne Hospital which is a smaller level 2 hospital an hour south of Tauranga.
Tauranga Hospital runs a busy acute general medical service with support from resident specialists in Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases, Geriatrics, Oncology, Haematology and Renal services
The successful candidate will join a department of 18 Physicians who share general medical responsibilities and will lead a team which includes a registrar and a house officer.
The role includes participation in acute medical assessment, admission and on call roster. There are teaching opportunities across undergraduate (years 4-6) and postgraduate (basic and advanced trainees) medicine.
Candidates with sup-speciality interests in any speciality are welcome and due to the flexible nature of the vacancy; trainees completing training within the next six months are also welcome to apply.
Applicants must hold or be eligible for vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council
As well as excellent clinical skills, you will need to demonstrate proficiency in these key areas:

Tauranga is a vibrant city and the surroundings are spectacular with beautiful beaches and countryside in close proximity. The Coromandel, East Cape and Auckland are all an easy drive away, as are the ski fields of the Central Plateau and Lake Taupō. There is outstanding access to outdoor recreational opportunities and a wide-range of schooling options, both public and private, an Institute of Technology and a recent addition is the University of Waikato Campus. Lifestyle options are diverse, and you can live 20 minutes from the hospital on a lifestyle block, in the bush, on an estuary with a boat or kayak or at the beachside town of Mount Maunganui and Papamoa.
