A registrar in Anaesthesia is sought for a regional hospital in New Zealand from December 2019 for a 6 or 12 month position. The hospital has 250+ beds with 24/7 Emergency Department and all major medical and surgical specialities.

The hospital offers excellent experience of general anaesthesia in a provincial centre, with the teaching hospitals of Auckland close by. You work closely with a supportive and enthusiastic consultant team and skilled nursing and allied health team.  The medical team also includes House Officers and medical students. The anaesthetic service is supported by specialist ED and ICU services and has good access to radiology and laboratory services. It is fully accredited for the FRANZCA training.

The successful applicant will be living in a beautiful part of New Zealand with warm summers, mild winters and lots of opportunities for outdoor activities on land and at sea just two hours' drive from Auckland, with regular flights to and from Auckland Airport.

 Key Duties:

  • Assessment and management of patients presenting for general and regional anaesthesia
  • Clinical investigations are ordered, and results assessed
  • Patient management care ordered or requested is appropriate to needs of patient and in accordance with current protocols
  • Ensure that the patient and their authorised representative are kept informed of the patient’s    current condition, the treatment being received, the overall plan and the expected outcome of their illness
  • Ensure all documentation and processes are clear and meet the policies of the health board.
  • Meet current standards of professional practice recommended by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (RANZCA)
  • Enroll in, and meet the professional development criteria of RANZCA
  • maintain personal competency in all areas of work undertaken to meet the requirements of accreditation and statutory bodies such as IANZ, QHNZ and NZMC
  • Contribute to service quality assurance by participating in clinical audits, case reviews and incident review processes
  • Provide teaching to other staff in the course of clinical work and at formal teaching sessions.
  • Include the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi within all aspects of the role and its outcomes
  • Observe and promote safe work practices, rules and instructions relating to work, and be pro-active in hazard management



  • Medical Degree from WHO approved medical school, completed Internship and minimum of 2 years’ experience post internship
  • Minimum experience 12 months in anaesthesia
  • License: General Registration or Eligibility for General Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Language: fluent English (IELTS Academic Module 7.5 average for non native speakers)
