Our client in New Zealand is seeking a Specialist Anaesthetist to work as a Fellow in Perioperative Medicine and Hyperthermia in their busy department in 2020.

The Position

We are looking for an Anaesthesia Provisional Fellow in Perioperative Medicine and Malignant Hyperthermia to join the Anaesthesia and ICU team based at a regional hospital This is a 12 month full time position. The fellow will take part in a predetermined weekly roster to ensure that fellowship requirements and clinical service requirements are met.

The fellowship involves sessions in Perioperative Medicine and Malignant hyperthermia. The fellow will be encouraged to further develop the perioperative medicine services in the hospital and work towards acquiring qualifications while in the post (in Perioperative medicine, echocardiography and Clinical pulmonary Exercise testing). The fellow would be encouraged to take part in New Zealand’s only Malignant Hyperthermia testing centre and be active in the research component of the department.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care provides a wide range of anaesthetic and intensive care services. The theatre complex consists of seven operating theatres. The department is staffed by 20 specialist anaesthetists, eight registrars in training posts and six senior house officers.

The role combines clinical duties providing anaesthesia services to patients, consultation with colleagues and education and training of resident medical staff.

The Hospital

This position is based at a 350 bed hospital in the Lower North Island of New Zealand. It is a secondary hospital and offers most medical and surgical specialities with the exception of Cardiothoracic, Plastic and Neurosurgery. It provides some tertiary care services. The hospital serves a local population of 170,000 but is the base for a regional head and neck oncology service which has responsibility for a population of 550,000 and draws patients from Whanganui, Taranaki, and Hawkes' Bay.
The collegial relationships between departments are strong and consultation with other specialists is easy, either formally with multidisciplinary meetings or informally as required. There is an active postgraduate medical society and there are excellent clinical library facilities.
