Dubai is in the process of rolling out the first phase of the compulsory health insurance for all expatriate workers and residents in the Emirate. This initial phase will add cover to 700,000 workers and is enforceable from Friday November 21st 2014.
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is linking the compulsory insurance to Residence visas to ensure compliance. At this stage all companies with over 1000 employees must comply with the Law and provide health care cover for all employees.
By June 2016 this will be compulsory for all companies and all expats working in the Emirate will be required to hold private medical insurance. A similar system has already been implemented in Abu Dhabi and has reduced the demand for public healthcare whilst stimulating demand for private medical care.
