Bahrain aims to reduce the numbers of patients who fly out of the country to seek medical treatment abroad by starting a new initiative in 2016 aimed at saving $66 Billion costs of flying Bahrainis abroad for treatments which cannot be provided in the country.
Under the present conditions, the Bahraini Government covers the costs of medical care, flights, hotels and living expenses for patients and relatives when appropriate treatments cannot be provided in Bahrain. The situation is untenable and recent approaches have experimented with flying doctors into Bahrain to provide treatments of conditions such as cancer. This has worked well and allowed patients to remain at home or in local hospitals for treatments. Doctors from the following countries have signed up for the programme: UK, USA, Germany, Belgium, Singapore, Thailand, India.
