A new Medical City is opening in Abu Dhabi.

Eighty-five percent of construction work has been completed at the AED4 billion ($1.08 billion) Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City project in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi General Services Company, also known as Musanada, has revealed a new construction update on the major healthcare project in preparation for the handover to Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha).

The 300,000 sq m project, which will be one of the biggest medical facilities dedicated to intensive care in the region and will have more than 2,000 healthcare staff, was visited by Saeed Eid Al Ghafli, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office.

He inspected the three completed towers dedicated to the mother and child unit, patient wards, and the intensive care and emergency department, according to news agency WAM.

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City will include 732 beds, two main wards, 36 VIP wards, and a mostly covered car park with a capacity for 1,610 cars.

Once completed, the city is set to be one of the biggest medical facilities dedicated to intensive care in the region and will feature operation rooms and emergency, intensive care, and neonatal departments as well as a medical research centre and 132 beds for intensive care cases, including an intensive care unit for premature babies.

The city will further have an advanced injuries centre, 18 operation rooms, and a traditional and premature birth department.

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City will also include two helicopter landing pads, WAM said, adding that is located in the Al Mafraq area of Abu Dhabi, close to residential areas such as Khalifa City, Shakhbout City and Mohammed bin Zayed City.
