  • Include your partner, and dependent children aged 24 and under, in your residence application.
  • Length of Stay: Indefinite
  • Age Range: 55 years of age or younger
  • A points-based system is used to assess Expressions of Interest.(EOI)
  • Currently a minimum of 160 points is needed to be considered

How to Apply

This visa is for people who have the skills to contribute to New Zealand’s economic growth. It is not for self employed people who want to work in their own business.

Before you can be invited to apply for the visa, you need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) detailing your employment in New Zealand, work experience, and qualifications. An on line form is first submitted to determine a score based upon your age, qualifications, skills and employment and a mimumim score of 160 is required to submit the EOI.

Your EOI will normally be assessed within 4 months of its submission (you can track this on line) and if successful, you will be invited to submit an application for the skilled migrant category visa which must be done within 6 months of receiving the invitation. Certain urgent skills are granted priority status and processed more quickly. If your EOI is not selected, it can remain in the general pool for up to 6 months and may be successful in the next round.

If your Expression of Interest is successful, you will have the opportunity to apply to live and work in New Zealand indefinitely.

Visa Conditions

If you were awarded points for an offer of skilled employment in Auckland, you must:

  • take up that job within 3 months of coming to New Zealand
  • stay in that job for at least 3 months.
  • continue to be paid at or above the level of remuneration for which skilled employment points were awarded to you, for at least 3 months.

If you were awarded points for an offer of skilled employment outside of Auckland, you must:

  • take up that job within 3 months of coming to New Zealand
  • stay in that job for at least 12 months
  • continue to be paid at or above the level of remuneration for which skilled employment points were awarded to you, for at least 12 months.

You can travel in and out of New Zealand as often as you like until your travel conditions expire.

To travel after that, you will need to apply for and be granted either:

  • a Permanent Resident Visa
  • a variation of your travel conditions, which would allow you to return to New Zealand at a later date.
