The Northland region of New Zealand is a fast growing area on the North Island of New Zealand and attracts many doctors and physicians to the rural setting. It is a forested, subtropical region of the country surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea. It’s home to stunning views and sheltered beaches - including the famous Ninety Mile Beach.

Location

The location of the region is given away by its name - it is the northernmost out of all of New Zealand’s regions sitting at the very top of the North Island. The region has a population of over 179,000 - with the majority of the population in the city of Whangarei and the largest town is Kerikeri. One-third of the population are Maori.

At the 2018 census, Northland recorded a population growth of 18 per cent since the previous census in 2013. This means that it is the fastest growing region in New Zealand ahead of regions such as the Bay of Plenty and Waikato. 

Northland is the least urbanised region throughout the whole of New Zealand as only half of the population live in urban areas - mostly in Whangarei which has a population of over 54,000.

Medical practice opportunities

There are four hospitals and three private hospitals in Northland - the main hospital is located in Whangarei, with smaller hospitals in the Bay of Islands, Kaitaia and Dargaville. The hospitals are also part of the Auckland Medical School Campus and participate in medical school education. 

There is also a network of clinics providing primary and secondary medical services with Auckland the tertiary referral centre.

Lifestyle

Northland is renowned for its relaxed lifestyle as it’s surrounded by beautiful beaches and harbours. Here, residents can enjoy surfing, sailing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. It is also a great place for fishing and diving with access to the world famous Pool Knights Marine reserve. The region is surrounded by forests and stunning hills for any keen hiker to have a go at.

It offers up excellent schools, affordable housing and there are plenty of opportunities to take up recreational activities in your spare time. It is just a two hour drive to Auckland or a 25 minute flight.

The area is often referred to as the “winterless north” due to the oceanic climate which produces warm humid summers and mild wet winters. Northland has New Zealand’s highest average annual temperature.
