A new hospital north of Toronto will open up to help out the health system with Covid-19 cases.

The Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will spend its first phase as a dedicated hub for treating coronavirus cases to help Ontario’s strained healthcare system.

The hospital won’t open for full service right away - but the new facility will focus on its 35 ICU beds and 150 general internal medicine beds which are for Covid patients.

The group Mackenzie Health say that the hospital is looking to expand their ICU capacity and their emergency department will remain closed for now.

Other programmes such as women’s and children’s health, inpatient mental health and stroke treatment will stay based at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital.

The Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is the first new hospital to be built in Ontario in more than 30 years.

The hospital will create about 1,000 jobs when it is opened as a full service healthcare facility.

It was built with mostly single patient rooms which allow for better infection prevention - ideal for Covid-19 cases.

The hospital opened as the province reported that over 900 people throughout Ontario were in hospital fighting coronavirus - this number includes 335 in ICU and 233 on ventilators.
