Director General of Health in New Zealand confirmed that there were no new cases of COVID-19 that had been recorded in the country.

Dr Ashley Bloomfield had stated on Wednesday May 20 that there were no news cases in New Zealand.

New Zealand now has a total number of 1,503 throughout the country. There have been five new recoveries recorded which takes the number up to 1,447 recoveries and only one person is in hospital with 35 active cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

On Tuesday, there were over 4,800 tests processed which took the overall total to over 238,000 tests completed.

The new contact tracing app NZ COVID Tracer was launched on Tuesday night and Dr Bloomfield has encouraged people to download it.

The app allows people to scan QR codes at businesses which records where they have visited. The process of tracking down and isolating people who may have been exposed and come into contact with the virus will be very important to New Zealand’s response to the virus in the long-term.

Privacy was a big consideration when it came to making the app but all information is kept on the person’s phone unless they choose to release their data. Dr Bloomfield said the data would only be used for the COVID-19 response.

Over 92,000 have registered for the app already and around 80,000 businesses have been contacted by the Ministry of Business about how to generate a QR code - over 1000 businesses have created a QR code.
