Malta Health Minister reveals plans for a new medical school at the University of Malta which will replace the facilities being used at the university and the Mater Dei Hospital.

After the new medical school building opened on the Queen Mary University campus in Malta, new plans have emerged for the construction of a new medical school for the University of Malta.

The new building will be home to the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and the Faculty of Health Sciences. It will be situated between the university building and the Mater Dei hospital

The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery currently has offices spread across the hospital and the university campus and the Faculty of Health Sciences are based in the hospital.

The new facilities are estimated to take around two years to construct.

Malta Health Minister Chris Fearne said the departments that are in the current hospital will be moved into the new building. The space that is left over will be converted into more wards and clinics within the hospital which will provide more services to patients.

Talks of building the new facility came up last month during the last budget discussion for the Ministry of Health.

On Thursday 28 November, the Health Minister will hold a meeting entitled: ‘Health Vision: In the next decade’.
