When you apply for a job, there is always the interviewing process to go through. It is no different when applying for a job overseas. However, these job interviews will most likely be over video call if you are in another country.
To make sure it all goes smoothly for you, here at Odyssey, we have put together some tips to help you with a video interview whether it be your first time or not.
Look the part
You would look your best for a face to face interview so do the exact same for a Skype interview. Normal interview etiquette applies when it’s a job interview over a video call. Even though you will most likely be sitting down with your bottom half hidden, you may still want to dress smart from head to toe. Just in case you have to stand up and sort your equipment at anytime.
It is vital to make a good impression and being formally dressed will put you in the right frame of mind when it comes to your interview.
You will want to set up your surroundings in a business like setting and ideally use a room with a door. A cluttered background will distract your audience and will not do anything good for your organisational skills. A blank neutral background is the best setting for a video interview.
If you have a busy household or pets, make sure you do not get interrupted. Let everyone in the house know that you are planning on making a Skype call and let them know what time it is at so nobody can interrupt you. Make sure pets are kept away from the interviewing space as well.
Have a practice run before your interview so you know exactly where to look and what to do with your hands. Doing a practice run through with a friend before your interview can be really useful.
Make sure you get to know how the programme works and get used to all the features on Skype. Once you have got the hang of everything, you can then go into your interview confident and not have to worry about the software.
It is very important to reassure the interviewer that you are still there and still listening. Never start fiddling around with your computer. That is one of the worst things you could do as it is a top hint that you are not listening.
It is also important to keep the interviewer engaged in what you are saying to them. Being aware of their interest level is crucial.
One advantage of a skype call is you don't have to remember everything. You can have notes in front of you so you can ask questions and bring up talking points.
However, make sure you are not using your notes too much. Make your notes easy to scan over, do not set it out like a script. The interviewer does not want to see the top of your head for the whole interview so just make sure that you only use your notes occasionally.
Make sure everything is working with your computer and with the connection as well. If a problem comes up during the interview, don't be afraid to bring it up and tell the interviewer. You don’t want to give a wrong answer because you didn’t hear the question properly.
