Research published this week has shown that a staggering 72% of men in Canada are leading an unhealthy lifestyle.
Conducted by the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation, the study is the first compiled in the country that has examined behaviour linked to disease instead of illness itself.
Five key areas that lead to disease were examined: Diet, sleep, exercise, smoking and alcohol consumption, with worrying statistics published for each section.
The study found that 62% of men in the country are leading an unhealthy diet, whilst 59% fail to hit the target of 150 minutes of moderate to strenuous exercise per week - leading to growing obesity rates.
The other finding that was dramatically above average was in the number of men getting too much or too little sleep - with 54% of respondents said to be in this group.
Alcohol and tobacco consumption levels were thankfully far lower, with 39% of men consuming an unhealthy amount of alcohol, and just 20% now being regular smokers - a figure that has dropped by 30% since the 1960s.
Speaking about the report, which surveyed 2,000 men between the ages of 19 and 94, Dr Larry Goldenberg, Canadian Men’s Health Foundation Chairman said: “We now have a platform to evaluate the health behaviours of Canadian men over time. I hope other researchers will use this platform to study different populations around the globe and design targeted interventions to encourage men to live healthier lifestyles.
“After all, 70% of men’s chronic health conditions are caused by lifestyle and, unlike genetics, can be changed to improve your health”
Whilst president of the CMHF, Warren Hartrick, remained positive, despite just 5% of men showing none of the habits.
He added: “It doesn’t take much for a man to go from the unhealthy category to the healthy category.
Think of these categories as a ladder. Most Canadian men can move up a rung by changing just one unhealthy behaviour. They can go up two rungs by changing two behaviours, like eating five fist-sized servings of fruit and getting seven hours of sleep.”
