Industry insiders have claimed that the demand for healthcare services in the United Arab Emirates will rise exponentially in the coming years.

According to the Dubai Health Authority, the demand for hospitals beds will increase dramatically as a result of the increasing demand from medical tourists, and the introduction of mandatory health insurance.

Public private partnerships are set to play a key role in the future of Emirati healthcare, with the DHA’s director of investment and partnership, Dr Ibtesam Bastaki, highlighting why this is essential

He said: “If one was to examine the rate of growth of population in the UAE, by 2025, at the current rate, we can expect a gap in inpatient beds, in price-positioning and in specialities. Therefore there certainly is potential, and our aim is to foster and promote health investment in areas where there are a lack of services or where there are opportunities for growth.”

Dubai is aiming to become a global hub of medical tourism, with ambitious targets to attract 500,000 medical tourists by 2020. With hopes that the trickle down effect of family visiting at the same time will have a positive impact on the Emirate’s economy.

Elsewhere new laws have been officially passed which will strictly regulate medical facilities, to ensure that they hit the highest possible standards.

Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said on the law’s passing: “The new law will facilitate a new growth phase in the healthcare sector and help cement Dubai's position as a global hub for medical tourism. We want to offer the best healthcare facilities and services, attract top healthcare establishments, the best medical personnel and the most advanced technologies.”

Despite experiencing a slow-down following the oil-price drop, the UAE remains a highly attractive location for those looking for a better life overseas.

Healthcare is to play a key role in the restructuring of the economy, and that means that there will be plenty of opportunities for Western trained medics looking for a move.
