UAE opens first Robotic Pharmacy

Fraser Clarke

The United Arab Emirates has launched its first robotic pharmacy, as the country continues to lead the way as the home of one of the world’s most technologically advanced healthcare sectors.

In an attempt to keep on top of the latest robotic trends in the healthcare industry the robotic dispenser, located in Dubai, will be able to serve 12 patients every single minute. As well as this the robot is completely paper free, meaning that doctors just need to send it the details of prescriptions electronically.

The robots used in these ‘smart pharmacies’ can store the details of over 35,000 medicines making them adaptable to any situation.

It is hoped that these will be the future of over-the-counter pharmacies, with their 24/7 nature making them suitable to the ever demanding world of healthcare. The only robot is currently located at Rashid Hospital, a 599 bed hospital near the American Hospital Dubai, however hopes are high that it will immediately be a success allowing it to be rolled out throughout the country.

For many years the UAE has been at the forefront of modern medical technology, with the recent advancements in robotic bariatric surgery combined with the robo-pharmacies ensuring that the country will remain in that position for many years to come.
