The Gastroenterologist is a physician with dedicated training and unique experience in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach and intestines) and hepatobiliary system (liver, gall bladder, biliary tree and pancreas). The gastroenterologist performs minimally invasive procedures to investigate and treat gastroenterological conditions by endoscopy, biopsy and paracentesis. The gastroenterologist is usually a trained internist and may practice internal medicine in addition to gastroenterology, participating in acute medical care. The gastroenterologist may have a further subspecialist interest in specific organ diseases such as hepatology, small bowel disease, pancreatic disease, inflammatory bowel disease or oncology.
