An Endocrinologist is a physician who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the glands, hormones or metabolism. Much of the endocrinologist’s work comprises the management of diabetes mellitus but endocrinologists also manage diseases of the pituitary, adrenal, thyroid and gonadal glands.  Due to major advances in molecular biology and technology, the majority of endocrine diseases can be managed as out patients with hospital admission required only for complex disorders or investigations. Most endocrinologists are trained internists or general physicians who undertake further subspecialist training in endocrinology and many endocrinologists continue to practice internal medicine.
