Working in the Americas

Work opportunities in the Americas are limited due to the licensing requirements to practice there. However we do have opportunities in Canada and from time to time in the Caribbean.

Canada

Canada has a socialised medical system and has both salaried and fee for service positions for physicians. Some hospitals offer a sign up or annual retention bonus as well as other benefits such as accommodation for a limited period. If the position offered is remunerated on a fee for service basis, the hospital may pay office expenses and offer an interest free loan to assist with the original establishment of the physician’s practice. The physician then manages his own taxation.

The majority of opportunities open to foreign graduates are in the more remote parts of the country and there is strong demand for Family Physicians, Psychiatrists and Internists.

Medical licensure

Licensing is handled by the Royal College of Physicians in each state and each state has different regulatory requirements. Some states allow physicians with qualifications from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa to practice. We can advise you of the requirements of each state. Each licensing body requires proof of English fluency.

Immigration

Visas and work permits are required to work in Canada and are issued by Canadian Embassies. Processing can take 2-3 months whilst the employer is required to demonstrate that no local physician is available.

Please get in touch with any questions about practising in Canada.

Caribbean

Occasionally we have posts coming up in the Caribbean island of Bermuda which is a former British colony. The hospital system is publically owned and run along similar lines to the British NHS. The hospital accepts physicians trained in a range of countries and requires that all speak good English. Please review the jobs data base for jobs in Bermuda or get in touch and we will advise you when anything comes up.
